P2 Mastering Musculoskeletal Assessment: The McKenzie Method

This workshop provides an in-depth exploration of the McKenzie Method, focusing on its application in assessing and managing musculoskeletal conditions. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the McKenzie Method's classification system for the lower back, neck, and extremities, learn to identify serious pathologies and their treatment indications, and stay updated on the latest evidence-based practices for tendon-related pathologies. The interactive and engaging format includes theoretical components, group work, and practical demonstrations, fostering a dynamic learning environment where attendees can discuss the role of massage therapy and observe assessments to enhance their practical skills

GOAL

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have an understanding of the McKenzie Method and its application in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this workshop, the participant will:

  1. Understand the McKenzie Method classification system in relation to the lower back, neck and upper and lower extremities
  2. Have an understanding of serious pathologies and the indications and contra-indications for conservative treatment
  3. Have an understanding of the latest evidence-based knowledge in the assessment and management of tendon related pathologies

OVERVIEW

The workshop will review the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy and its application in the assessment and management of common musculoskeletal conditions. It will include theoretical component, group work and plenty of interaction via various media. There may be the opportunity to observe an assessment and a discussion around the findings.

The course will be interactive, fun and challenging as well as there will be the opportunity to discuss common musculoskeletal presentations and the role that massage therapy may play in the management of these conditions.

Greg Lynch - Dip Phty, Dip MDT, Dip MT, PGDiplomaRehab (Dist.), MNZCP (Manipulative Therapy)

Greg graduated from the Otago School of Physiotherapy in 1991. He completed the Diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (Dip MDT) in 1994 and the Diploma in Manipulative Therapy (Dip MT) in 1996. He completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation (Distinction) in 2022. He was recognised as an Advanced Practitioner with the NZ College of Physiotherapy (MNZCP).

He is an International Instructor with the McKenzie Institute International and has been lecturing extensively with the Institute since 2004. He is a member of the Institutes Board of Trustees and a past member of the McKenzie Institute International (MII) Education Council.

He has lectured throughout the world and has presented at numerous international conferences.

He has been involved in several research papers including the EXPOSS studies (2019 & 2022), exploring the prevalence of spinal related extremity pain. He was also a co-author on a a systematic review titled ‘Excluding the Cervical Spine in patients presenting with primary shoulder pain’ in 2017 and a further paper titled ‘Examination of the neck when a patient complains of shoulder pain: a global survey of current practice’ published in 2019.

Greg has been an accredited provider with ‘High Performance Sport New Zealand’ since 2000. He has worked in private practice since 1992 and is a Co-Director and senior physiotherapist of Inform Physiotherapy Limited and was a founding Director of Wellington Sports Medicine. He has managed athletes from the NZ7’s teams (men and woman), NZ Hockey (men and woman), NZ Netball and the NZ swim squad.

He is a member of Physiotherapy NZ, NZ Manipulative Physiotherapists Association, McKenzie Institute NZ, NZ Pain Society, Occupational health Physiotherapy group and Sport Physiotherapy NZ.
