Bill Wareham Award

The Bill Wareham Award is presented annually at the MANZ AGM to an MANZ member who has made an out-standing contribution to the massage profession. Bill Wareham started the first massage organisation in New Zealand, the Massage Institute of New Zealand (MINZ) back in 1985 and this award is a recognition of his contribution to massage therapy in New Zealand.

Presented for her outstanding academic credentials and contributions to the New Zealand's professional landscape. Sharing cultural and professional diversity as a massage practitioner. Developing educational programs, providing mentoring for students and professional development for massage practitioners. Providing and teaching energy and body work, leading massage therapist for top sporting teams.

2020 Joanna Tennent
Presented for her consistent support of all massage events, and continuing thirst for knowledge in the massage profession. Teaching, inspiring, and challenging massage students with passion and rigour for over 20 years. A forward thinker for the Massage Industry in NZ and has made many International links. Always willing to get involved with any MANZ activities.

2021 Mark Fewtrell
Presented for 25 years of ongoing involvement in and contribution to the massage industry - providing massage therapy for multiple high level sporting events, teams and organisations since 1997, assisting MANZ with networking meetings for many years, including organising an MANZ conference and providing years of mentoring.  

2022 Odette Wood
Presented for being a dedicated MANZ member for years, serving many MANZ roles, including Executive Administrator, supporting smooth transitions for leadership. Passionate about evidence-based practice, she initiated the MANZ Case Study contest. During the lockdown, she fostered Membership connections with online coffee groups, showcasing her commitment to community. Her pivotal role in developing the MANZ magazine underscores her dedication to organisational growth.

2023 Doug Maynard
With over 25 years of clinical expertise, Doug has excelled as the proprietor of an award-winning Massage Clinic, overseeing a team of up to 5 therapists. His commitment to staff development through on-site training and mentorship has been outstanding. A seasoned educator for 23+ years at NZCM and Wintec, Doug seamlessly integrates extensive clinical experience with advanced technical knowledge. Serving as the former Education Officer for MANZ, his passion for massage therapy is evident in his dedication to education, professionalism, and impactful contributions to the field, making him truly deserving of this award.

2024 Sue Wakeling
This year, the Bill Wareham Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Massage Profession is presented to Sue Wakeling for her significant impact on her community and the next generation of therapists through her successful clinic in Hawkes Bay. Despite personal challenges, including losses from Cyclone Gabrielle, Sue has shown unwavering dedication to her clients and fellow therapists while advancing massage education at the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT). MANZ is proud to honour Sue's resilience, perseverance, and exceptional service to the profession.

Life Membership Award

Massage Aotearoa New Zealand may award Life Membership to a current MANZ member who, in the opinion of the organisation has made an exceptional contribution to Massage Aotearoa New Zealand and/or the field of therapeutic massage. Life membership is an honour bestowed by the organisation, therefore as such, it is limited to 12 life members at any one time. To be eligible for Life Membership, a person must have held Massage Aotearoa New Zealand membership for at least five years prior to the nomination. The Life Membership Award is voted on and presented at the Annual General Meeting.

How to nominate someone for a Life Membership Award

Life members must be nominated for such status by two current financial members of MANZ. The nomination must include details about why the person has been nominated The nominated member must provide a written citation detailing the positions they have held and achievements they have accomplished that have contributed to the work of MANZ and the field of massage therapy. This citation must be included with this nomination form. To be passed, the nomination must be endorsed by a majority vote of 75% of those present at an AGM.

Top Student Award

Massage Aotearoa New Zealand offers a Top Student Award annually. The award gives the recipient one complimentary annual MANZ membership. Awards are given through colleges that are Affiliate members of MANZ (an affiliate college is one that has paid the annual Massage Aotearoa New Zealand Affiliate membership fee). Each college selects their own top student to be the recipient of the award that year. The award is presented to the student at the college's graduation ceremony or prize giving.
